Teaching Philosophy
In addition to his performance career, Brendan maintains an active private flute studio of all ages. He is happy to pass on the knowledge and techniques he has attained from the highest level flute teachers in the world to the next generations of flutists. As comfortable in the masterclass setting as private lesson setting, Brendan has taught masterclasses at the Boston Flute Academy, Middle Tennessee State University and in Memphis, TN. He is a woodwinds coach at the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras, is called upon regularly to coach woodwinds at Tufts University and is requested to serve on the New Hampshire All-State woodwinds audition panel.
Brendan’s approach to teaching is to cater to the unique musical needs each student brings with them. A firm believer in shaping a large, projecting and clear tone first and foremost, he teaches from the tonal exercise books of Marcel Moyse with an array of appropriate repertoire from each major era of music. Each week, students walk away with a clear and written out assignment list that is productive and manageable to accomplish in a given week. Previous student successes include All-State and All-Eastern Orchestra honors, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras admission and supplemental recordings for college and private school admissions. Teaching from Home
Offering lessons from a large studio space in his home conveniently located outside of Boston, students have access to high-quality microphone recording and playback, if necessary. There is also a piano and plenty of space to pursue their musical studies on a weekly basis. Parents are always welcome to sit in on lessons or sit in a comfortable adjacent room to the studio if they wish. Every week students leave with a clear sense of what they should be working on and practicing for each given week.
Teaching from Skype
Skype lessons are a convenient way for students across the globe to receive flute lessons. Offered in one hour blocks of time, a student can walk away from Skype sessions with clear advice on all flute-playing aspects including posture, tone and technique.
